The SYFY TV series, Dark Matter, based on the comic book series of the same name, is the brainchild of Joseph Mallozzi (the Stargate series), and writing partner, Paul Mullie. The series follows the crew of the starship, the Raza, who awoke in deep space with no memory of who they are. On the surface, they appear to be a group of misfits with a criminal history, and they desperately try to ascertain who they really are while facing new threats and questionable allegiances. Dark Matter airs on Fridays and is fast approaching the end of Season 3, with fans rallying for a Season 4 renewal.

Candice Michelle Goodwin (@candicemg & @rwcproductions) discusses all things Dark Matter with creator, Executive Producer, and writer, Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo).

Airing on SyFy on August 11th at 9pm: Dark Matter 3x11 "The Dwarf Star Conspiracy" Promo "One of the Android's newly discovered memories leads the crew to a suspicious Dwarf Star facility on Nova 17."

CMG: Thanks Joe for taking the time to discuss all things Dark Matter. Could you please give us a brief overview of what has happened to The Raza crew in Season 3 and what we can expect as we approach the end of the season?

JM: Whereas season 1 was all about the shipboard mystery and journey of self-discovery for our crew, and season 2 was all about the quest for redemption, season 3 focuses on the corporate war and the crew’s battle against one of their own, former ally now sworn enemy FOUR/Ryo Ishida.

CMG: Can you give us any teasers of what may be expected in a Season 4? Is there a 5-year plan for the show?

JM: There is definitely a 5-year plan for the show. If season 1 was Secrets and Surprises, and season 2 was Risks and Redemption, and season 3 is Victories and Vengeances, season 4 will be Androids and Aliens. And you can’t get any more sci-fi than that. As for season 5 - which, if everything works out, should be the show’s final 13-episode installment - I have a plan to tie up all the storylines. I even have the show’s final sequence in my head.

CMG: Personally, my favorite character is The Android. I am always excited when The Android is utilized on off-ship adventures and when she deals with her 'humanity'. Zoie Palmer is brilliant in this role. Yet, the original Android was envisioned differently. Can you tell us about the evolution of this character and what the future holds for her?

JM: The Android was originally envisioned as male but, when it came time to cast, we opened the role up to all genders (we did the same for the character of FOUR). Zoie Palmer just brought something unique to the audition that everyone responded to. And, as the show progressed in those early episodes, her interpretation of the Android was so delightful that I couldn't help but be drawn to write more for her - well, more than I’d originally planned.

Airing on SyFy on August 11th at 9pm: Dark Matter 3x11 "The Dwarf Star Conspiracy" Sneak Peek: The Android (Zoie Palmer) has a hunch that Three (Anthony Lemke) might be afraid and we think she might be right.

CMG: Anthony Lemke (Three) is a fan favorite and gave an awesome performance in the equally awesome time loop episode, Season 3's "All the Time in the World". Another scene-stealer is guest star Ennis Esmer (also on Private Eyes). Have the writers taken note of the positive response towards these characters / actors and are there plans to utilize Anthony and Ennis even more in future episodes?

JM: Ours is an ensemble show and, as a result, we try to spotlight all of our crew members in different stories. I don’t think Anthony’s character is lacking in stories or screen time. Like Zoie, Anthony is another actor who simply nailed his audition and has really done a fantastic job of fashioning a terrific character over these three seasons. As for Ennis Esmer, I’ve been a long-time fan of his work, even more so after his first appearance in the season 1 2-parter… in which he was ultimately killed off. But, fortunately, this is science fiction and there are creative ways around pesky problems like death. Ennis made a return appearance in season 2 and season 3. As for what the future holds for the character of Wexler - like I said, it’s no secret that I'm fond of Ennis and his interpretation of Wexler. There’s a good chance we'll see more of him… should he survive the season 3 finale.

CMG: Stargate fans have enjoyed seeing Stargate alumni guest star on Dark Matter. David Hewlett (as Tabor) and Torri Higginson’s (as Commander Truffault) performances have been wonderful and memorable. Are there plans for other Stargate veterans to make an appearance on Dark Matter? Perhaps Amanda Tapping could direct more episodes?

JM: One of the first things I learned when I started in this business was the acronym LTS. It stands for "Life’s Too Short" and refers to the fact that unpleasant people make for unpleasant working environments… so why do that to yourself? On the flip side, there are those individuals who are a joy to work with, and those are the people you’ll often see pop up in multiple productions. Like Stargate veterans Torri Higginson, David Hewlett, and Mike Dopud - actors who created a positive impression and working atmosphere the first time around. And there are others. Would love to convince a host of former Stargate cast members to put in guest appearances: Bob Picardo, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, Ming-Na Wen, Brian J. Smith, Richard Dean Anderson - just a few of the many great actors I’ve worked with over the years who I’d love the opportunity to work with again someday. Their interest, schedule, and our budget permitting of course.

CMG: Fans are anxiously hoping for a Season 4 pickup and are campaigning with #RenewDarkMatter on social media. What else can fans do to support the show?

JM: Watch live. Tell your friends to watch live. Or if they can’t watch live, watch time-delayed up to three days after the episode airs. Stream on syfy.com! And tweet tweet tweet!
